Super Bowl Memories: SB XV

Postby blazin1 » Thu Jan 31, 2013 3:22 pm

The Oakland Raiders defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10 in Super Bowl XV, New Orleans’ fifth Super Bowl and the second in the Louisiana Superdome.

This was the first Super Bowl appearance for the high-flying Eagles and the third for the plucky wild card Raiders.

Led by quarterback and Super Bowl XV Most Valuable Player Jim Plunkett, the Raiders unleashed an unrelenting offensive assault on the Eagles defense.

Plunkett accumulated 261 yards passing and threw for three touchdowns including an 80-yard bomb to running back Kenny King in the first quarter.

Wide receiver Cliff Branch caught the other two Plunkett touchdown passes to help Oakland cruise to an easy victory.

Many New Orleans sports fans were already familiar with Plunkett, who was selected first overall in the 1971 NFL draft — one pick before Saints great Archie Manning.

Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski tallied 291 yards and one touchdown, but he also threw three crucial interceptions.

During the postgame trophy presentation, Raiders owner Al Davis dedicated the victory to the recently freed hostages in the Iran hostage crisis — a years-long saga which had reached a peaceful end just five days before Super Bowl XV.
