Derrick Johnson is the kind if stop gap player we need until we can pick a quality linebacker in next year's draft.
I preferred Bowman simply because he's a little younger, but he's also a step slower than the older Johnson. He's not as good on passing downs either, and came alot cheaper. This was the smart play.
Has anyone read up on Azeem Victor our LB from Washington? Before breaking his leg, he was a standout LB on a very talented defense at Washington. Kid has a shit ton of talent and will be fighting with Marquel Lee for the 3rd LB spot.
Johnson understands the AFC west like no other and will provide insight come chief week.
Sure he's 35, but I'm saying he's a better option at this point right now considering salary cap, and the quality of players still left.

I went back to 2017 early mock draft boards by all the typical sites, all of them had Arden Key top 5-15, Azeem Victor was ranked in the top 25-32 for just about half of the mocks, I didn't see Hurst anywhere because I think he was only a sophomore. Out of everyone, he was the one with surefire 1st round talent buy had the heart issue, which has since been cleared at least this year.
Out of all of these guys I'm most excited about Key, I'm hoping he'll be able to spell Mack and Irvin. Those two rarely came off the field last year and got burnt out as the season wore on. Wasn't Jack's fault he got dealt a bad draft choice in Jihad ward!
Let's not forget about Mario Edwards, maybe he can be kept fresh now with all the additional bodies in the fold?

We need the defense to step up this year for once in a long time. Guenther I believe will make this defense respectable at some point this year and we'll actually have a defense that is nice to watch.

If the defense can just be a notch above middle of the road, I'd be happy. Lots of ??? for this season.
