Carr Arranges Two-Day Mini-Camp For Team

BAKERSFIELD – Raiders quarterback Derek Carr missed most of the offseason program with a minor injury. That was a particular disappointment given his receiver corps’ composition, which features new or newly healthy players in prominent roles.

The offseason helps establish timing, rhythm and scheme knowledge, and the passing game didn’t have much time to get in sync.

Last week, quarterback and receivers made up for lost time. Carr invited the receiver corps to his family’s Carr Elite training facility in Bakersfield for a two-day passing minicamp on Thursday and Friday.

“The offseason is when you really become a team,” Carr told CSN Bay Area on Saturday. “The more you can get together at someone’s house, or even out here in Bakersfield, shows the commitment everyone has to turning things around.”

Despite being hours away from the East Bay during prime time for last-minute vacations, attendance was strong. Nearly everyone showed up for the two-day session, which featured passing drills and conditioning work.

While first-round pick Amari Cooper wasn't in Bakersfield, he and Carr worked out privately earlier in the offseason.

Michael Crabtree, Mychal Rivera, Brice Butler, Rod Streater, Seth Roberts, Josh Harper, Kenbrell Thompkins and Andre Holmes caught passes from Carr and some from his older brother David in the San Joaquin Valley.

“I think is says something about Derek’s leadership that guys would come all the way out here to put in some extra time,” David Carr said. “I was really impressed by the work ethic these guys have.”

Derek Carr considered it a productive two-day session.

“It was a great refresher for everyone, and the timing couldn’t have been better,” Carr said. “It was two weeks before camp and just far enough away from the last minicamp for guys to find it useful. It was a refresher course that should really help the start of training camp itself. This way, the mistakes won’t happen on day No. 1. We already fixed that stuff.”

It was helpful for upgraded group of receivers to get with their unquestioned starter, something that didn’t happen much during the offseason program.

“It was important to get the timing of the routes down, especially for new guys and guys coming off injuries from last year. Any extra time is crucial, and we wanted to take full advantage of it.”
