Could the Raiders Trade Carson Palmer to Browns?

Aside from their high placement in the NFL draft the Oakland Raiders don't have much wiggle room to retool their roster. Given what they need on offense should they simply deal Carson Palmer to a team like the Cleveland Browns?

Terrelle Pryor offers Raiders a bridge beyond Palmer

The Silver and Black have work to do. After another failed finished down the stretch, new Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie has the 3rd overall pick to begin building Oakland back into a contender. Debates rage on where he should direct the pick. Many believe the defense takes priority. After all the offense has some stable pieces in place with running back Darren McFadden and quarterback Carson Palmer. The problem is that tandem hasn't produced wins. McFadden can't stay healthy. Palmer threw for over 4,000 yards but only managed 22 touchdowns while tossing 14 interceptions. His lack of mobility got him sacked a lot behind a bad offensive line. Worst of all his best days are behind him at age 33. Those facts have sparked some rumors that maybe it's time for the team to look for a younger option. Backup Terrelle Pryor is an unknown as a starter but has great athletic ability. Given the recent rise of the read-option, it seems the Raiders could switch to that and go with Pryor for the future or as a bridge to when they find a better option. This would allow them to trade or release Palmer who will count $14.6 million against the salary cap in 2013.

Rob Chudzinski needs more competition for Brandon Weeden

Trading him is a tough sell. Most of the teams that could use a new quarterback either don't have money or would rather risk drafting a rookie than talk a deal. One team that could at least consider it is the Cleveland Browns. They have $48.9 million in salary cap space to spend, so they would easily absorb the Palmer contract. The asking price for him won't go higher than a 3rd round pick and it gives new Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski the insurance he will need to give current starter Brandon Weeden competition. Some draft experts wondered if Cleveland might take another quarterback in the first three rounds just a year after drafting Weeden. Adding Palmer would solve that short-term problem and give the Browns some veteran experience for their younger quarterbacks to feed off of. Weeden doesn't have time on his side like most rookies since he turns 30 in October. Still Chudziski needs to get every advantage possible. Bringing in Palmer would not only give him another solid backup but just the player to test whether Weeden can deal with adversity.

The Oakland Raiders need more draft help if they want their turnaround to go quickly. For that they must seek out trades. Carson Palmer has become too old and too expensive for them. If the Cleveland Browns are interested then it is a deal that needs to happen.

Palmer isn't going anywhere. If the offense and defense gets sorted out he is the best option at QB.
