Raiders Minicamp Day One Recap

Postby Tenebrous » Thu Jun 19, 2014 11:57 am

The second day of Raiders mandatory minicamp is today from 2:10pm to 4:15pm Pacific Time at the Raiders Alameda facility. Here's are my day one observations and what to watch for on day two.

Still out recovering from injury were Antonio Smith, Kevin Burnett, D.J. Hayden, and Lucas Nix. Joining them were Carlos Rogers (calf), and James Jones (shoulder). Jones landed awkwardly in practice and came up holding his shoulder before eventually heading to the locker room. Rogers was out all of practice.

Smith, Hayden, and Nix are all expected to miss the entirety of minicamp. The others' status are uncertain.

The Raiders mixed things up on defense, playing Miles Burris with the first team in place of Sio Moore at weakside linebacker. They also rotated Kieth McGill and Chimdi Chekwa at cornerback with the first team. Part of this was due to the absence of D.J. Hayden and Carlos Rogers.

On offense, the news was Derek Carr taking over all second team reps in place of Matt McGloin. Carr has looked quite good throwing the ball thus far. The ball jumps off his arm and it looked effortless for him. While the usually steady hand of McGloin didn't have zip on his passes with many of them falling short of his target or skipping on the turf.

There was one interception in practice. It was Justin Tuck getting a hand on a Schaub pass to tip it at the line and Tarell Brown was there to pick it off. Tuck had also intercepted Schaub in the first OTA as well so Schaub is gonna need to keep an eye on where he is at all times.

It wasn't a good day for the receivers, particularly those with numbers in the teens. The drops were many. Greg Little (15) dropped two passes as well as Andre Holmes (18). Undrafted receivers Mike Davis (19), Rahsaan Vaughn (13), and David Gilreath (16) all had drops along with Brice Butler (12). I saw a total of ten drops (and that's just those I saw personally) which is far too many for a practice, especially with no pads.

Little had been making a good impression prior to Tuesday's practice but that has long been his MO. He has undeniable talent but a tendency to struggle with drops. He was working diligently on the jugs machine after practice.

As for today, we'll be watching to see how they mix up the linebacker corps. Also if the receivers and McGloin can bounce back.
