Maurice Jones-Drew has done the rookie quarterback thing in Jacksonville, and it wasn’t that nifty, so he would prefer not to do it again. But …
The Raiders running back has been impressed with rookie Derek Carr at offseason practices, and this week’s mini-camp.
“I feel like, if it’s me, I would prefer him to sit and watch and learn and then come in, but Derek has sat and watched,” Jones-Drew said. “He had a brother that was in the NFL, so he’s done that, and he’s done a great job competing, coming in and moving up, throwing the ball well.”
As we reported last week, Carr has come in and quickly taken second-string snaps from Matt McGloin. Carr is not a threat to starter Matt Schaub yet, but continues to impress coaches and new teammates with his arm strength and accuracy.
“He’s learning the protections, putting himself in positions to be successful, and as a quarterback, that’s all you can do,” Jones-Drew said. “You have to trust everyone else around you, and so he’s done a great job. Obviously, you want to see what he does when the pads come on, because that’s what really matters, but up to this point, he’s done an amazing job and I know guys are feeling his presence.”
Carr, for his part, said Wednesday that he pays no attention to the depth chart.
“For me, I don’t look at who’s next to me, or any of those things,” Carr said. “I try to push myself to be better every single day. I try and make a throw, and the routes on air… ‘Oh I threw it bad last time, I’m going to throw it better this time.’ It’s little things like that, that maybe you don’t see in a team drill or things like that, that I think about.
“I don’t think about the depth chart. I don’t think about who’s in the room or anything like that. I just come out here and I work. I keep my mouth shut, I keep my head down and I just go to work. Eventually hard work will pay off.”
